Ideas & inspirations

Why I started writing the Doofuzz Dudes series

Many years ago  Christmas Day  used to be so exciting. You could drive around the streets of Sydney and see children playing with their new toys – their cricket sets, their roller skates and their new bikes. Nowadays, the streets are totally deserted on Christmas Day and I can only imagine that children are indoors playing computer games.

I thought it would be wonderful for children to get out and have a real adventure outdoors – just like the Doofuzz Dudes. That’s why I created the series. I wanted to stimulate children’s imaginations in the hope they would make their own adventures and not just “veg out” on the couch or in front of a computer.

How do I get ideas and inspirations for my books?

The Doofuzz Dudes have a lot about my life in them. For example, when I was young I used to play all the time on the Knoll at Northbridge. The Knoll is covered with bush and it’s a great place to have picnics. I also like to write about things that are close to my heart like friendship , care for the environment, acupuncture, honesty and caring for animals.

The Doofuzz Dudes’ mascot is my dog Indy and Bobo, the Puzzle Master’s dog, was my dog for many years and many of my friends also find their way into my stories.

In the Princess Detector I mention acupuncture because I am an acupuncturist and I want children to know all about it. I think it’s an important part of health care and it’s been around for many thousands of years.

The Blabbel of Salcazar is a made up of different aspects of people I met when I was working in the business world as an accountant. People for whom money was the be all and end all of life. How sad! I want my books to show that there are values that are more important than money and how much you have. Values such as fair play, friendship and loyalty.

Surprisingly, I’ve never been to another planet, but I have a very good idea about what is happening on them. In future Doofuzz Dudes books the Dudes will travel to many more planets and have some most unusual adventures on them.
